Honestly, I'm planning on getting out. This type of behavior is something I've seen out of those in the other branches (especially the Army) a lot more than out of Marines, although even I've been guilty of this line of thinking. When I got to Iraq, I couldn't care less about the Iraqis or what happened to them. You and I both know that (many, but certainly not all) Marines think it's funny when a house gets bombed or Iraqis die.

Those of us who join the Marines join to defend our freedoms, our country, or maybe just for college money. There are lots of different reasons, but the fact is that as Marines, we don't actually defend freedom or the country. If we did, we would be IN the country instead of Iraq. We are not fighting for our country, we are fighting for our GOVERNMENT. The country can't ask us to do anything; the President, the congress, and the chain of command in the Marine Corps can.

The question of why bother being a Marine is something that everyone has to answer on their own, but personally, I agree with General Smedley Butler (one of only two Marines to win the medal of honor TWICE), who said (after he got out of the Marines) that war is a racket, and that our country's military forces should be limited to within our borders. I've personally seen how much money is being wasted and being paid to contractors and companies such as KBR and Haliburton in war zones, and I can attest to the fact that the military-industrial complex makes obscene profits off of war.

Being limited to operating within our own borders would still allow the military to protect the country. Personally, I'd rather see the military budget go to buying and equipping ALL of the citizens with weaponry and training, similar to what Switzerland does. Switzerland hasn't been in a war or been attacked in over 800 years, not even by Hitler who was basically foaming at the mouth to attack them for their gold. This would keep the protection of the country at a local level, which is what the founders intended anyways.

I guess I'll pose a question just for the sake of taking this a little further.

Why bother being a Marine at all then?

Personally that question is very difficult for me to answer.
